I went on a very interesting bird watching walk this morning on the common. straight off we saw a flock of Goldfinches feasting on spiky fruit from the plane trees that line Streatham Common South Side, must look out for the emigrating pigeons flying in their thousands to warmth every morning that Peter told us about, and at night all the Parakeets zooming home to their spooky roost in Hither Green Cemetary. I'm Reading Wildwood by Roger Deakin at the moment, it's a prolonged meditation on wood as the fifth element. I really felt the truth of that today in the woods above Streatham Common looking for Woodpeckers...what he says about woods being like a kind of ocean: 'once inside a wood, you walk on something very like the seabed, looking up at the canopy of leaves as if it were the surface of the water..'
